For those who might not know me...I started seriously working on losing weight in January 2018. I’ve lost over 30 lbs since then and reached my goal of 125 last week eating low carb high fat. I started going to the gym in May but had been doing elliptical and some strength exercises at home since January.
Since May (and starting at the gym) my hair has been falling out like crazy. I had fairly thick hair so I wasn’t too worried but it’s not thick anymore and I’m starting to wonder when this will stop or what I can do to help it. I haven’t done extreme calorie restriction or anything (average daily is 1350-1500) so what is going on? I take vitamins and electrolytes. I don’t want all my hair to fall out! 😬 any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you had your thyroid tested? My hair started falling out a few years ago. Had my thyroid tested. I was in the "normal" range. But the range is so vast, you can test "normal" and still not be where you need to be. I was put on synthroid. My hair stopped falling out.

I had it tested a few months ago (and several times before that because I’m often very tired) but it always comes back in normal range and my dr won’t treat it if it’s normal. Might need to have it retested and ask to try taking something and see if it helps. Thanks!

Hey momma.. are u anaemia ( especially if you’re tired, but. Hair loss can be related to this too. My hair thinned a bit when I started low carb and slowed down in growth as well.. if there’s no underlying medical condition maybe Biotin soups would work for you, they worked fir me 😉

Please talk to a professional as whatever the reason, losing hair is not normal and something or things are causing it. Easier to stop the problem than trying to get it back.

I agree with Sally. You should talk to a medical professional. It could be as simple as stress, or something more serious (thyroid).

Thanks guys. I’m not anaemic...had that tested a couple of months ago along with thyroid which was normal. All blood work was normal. When I started dieting, my hair grew a lot and got thick—stopped shedding at all so maybe it is just catching up?? I’ve read there is a hair cycle that can be disrupted by dieting and lasts about 6 months?? My hair is growing (roots are showing after going lighter haha) just shedding a ton the past two months

Most times when hair is falling out to a significant degree without cause such as medical or hereditary or genetics, it’s usually due to nutritional deficiencies to some degree

You could also try upping your protein intake since protein is also a component of hair, skin, nails, organs, bones & certain hormones etc. . Which also helps with cellular growth and repair of vital tissues in the body & the provider of essential amino acids.

Anemia can do this too...

Hair loss can be a vitamin D deficiency symptom. I’d check in with your primary doc get some labs done.

If your checking bloodwork, have your B12 checked. Easy to get booster injections if needed, and will stop hair loss within days (if that’s the cause).

My sister lost a lot of weight last year, after weight loss surgery. A lot of her hair fell out. Dr told her it was normal were losing a lot of weight. A year later all her hair is back. She did change her color routine. She stopped using chemical hair dyes and now dyes her hair naturally with Henna. She's young but has a lot of grays, so she dyes it often. Says the Henna made a big diference.

I am with you, I had severe pp hair loss, thought first it was thyroid but it checked out, then later realized it was vitamin deficiencies, D at that. blackseed oil will help restore your hair also, or take the seeds, best to you and your health.

I’m right there with ya momma! I’ve been losing hair as well. Checked with 3 different doctors now 😂. I was low on vit D so I’m taking a supplement. Thyroid fine, b12 fine, tested for a lot of other things but two doctors said that when you lose a large amount (%) of body weight it’s normal (if no medical reason can be found) and it’s quite common. It’s a cycle and will come back. I’m using Nioxin hair care and it’s helping as my hair was super thin to begin with. Now I have bald spots !!! But eh, it’s just hair. 😂😂. Definitely mention to your doctor to see if he wants to check you for typical causes and vitamin deficiencies.

For years my hair didn't grow, unless I was pregnant! I never had it cut, it just didn't grow much. Several years ago my doctor decided I needed to take thyroid medicine. Guess what, my hair is growing! here I am 76 with very little gray hair, and now it is growing, but beginning to come in gray! Mixed blessing!

I'm no doctor but I suggest since you've been on the keto diet it is high-fat low-carb and you still need to get all the vitamins and minerals from leafy green vegetables and cook vegetables but also if your vitamin D deficient 20 minutes in the sun will give you your daily amount

Could be an iron deficiency.
