With all the bad news this week has brought the world, I finally have some great news to share! I just spoke with my doctor. He just gave me the results of my follow-up tests. They were so good that he took me OFF All THE MEDICATIONS I've been taking! I was taking one cholesterol medicine and two blood pressure medicines everyday for at least the last six years. Now I'm COMPLETELY MEDICINE FREE!!! As I reported a couple weeks ago, I was also able to reverse my pre-diabetes, so ... I'm ecstatic! 😁

gz9gjg, I didn't yet have Type 2 Diabetes. I was pre-diabetic for at least 5 years though. I was not on diabetes medicine. I was only on one cholesterol medicine and two for high blood pressure.

I just bought a couple extra things and set them aside each time I went out. I'm concerned and am self isolating sure to a chronic health issue, but that's not going to stop me from making a quick run to the hardware store to build a cabinet I was planning on making. I'll go stir crazy otherwise. Stay safe, friends. Snow is almost gone here.

mhammo, jydavis, On December 26th, 2019 I started doing everything I possibly could to get my health back on track.  At the time, I was considered obese.  I was already taking blood pressure medicine, and medicine for cholesterol, and I had been pre-diabetic for a while too.  This was the day though that my doctor told me my A1C had risen to 6.5, which is just into the Type 2 Diabetes range.  If my next test came back that high, I would be diagnosed with Diabetes, and that would require more medication.  That really scared me! I'm a traveler.  Since retiring two years ago, I've enjoyed travelling around North America in my RV and really love the lifestyle.  Diabetes would interfere with my ability to continue, so I had to do something.  I didn't have much time either, because the doctor wanted to see me again in three months, on March 26, to check my progress and possibly start treating me for diabetes.  I decided to do everything I could to correct the situation before my next doctor visit. I scoured the internet for every bit of information I could find about nutrition and diabetes and what it would take to tackle my health issues.  I discovered that my problems were all related and working to correct one, was really working on correcting all of them. Through internet research I determined just how much of each nutrients I should have in a day to reach my goals of losing weight, lowering my cholesterol, lowering my A1C and lowering my blood pressure.   I then reacquainted myself with a great tool called FatSecret that I'd used before to lose weight.  This time I used FS differently though.  When I dieted previously, I'd always only counted calories.  I never paid any attention to the nutrients.  I now feel tracking the nutrients was really the key to reaching my goals!   I used the ability of the FatSecret app to set targets for each nutrient, and I entered the maximum I should have of each nutrient as determined by my internet research.  From there I tracked nutrients, not calories!  They say "the devil's in the details", and they really are.  By tracking the nutrients in everything I ate, I was able to see where the poisons were.  I'd eat all the calories I could as long as they didn't push me over on any of the limits I'd set for each nutrient.  I found that the hardest nutrient to keep within limits was sodium, because it's in EVERYTHING!  So I adjusted.  In order to have room for more calories each day, I switched to "no salt added" and "lower sodium" products, and I took my salt shaker off the table.  I ate what I wanted everyday, as long as my nutrient limits weren't exceeded. I also installed the Google Fit app, and started getting active.  The app automatically tracks activity, and syncs with FatSecret, as you may already know.  I walk everyday now, at an ever increasing pace, at least 2.75 miles, or more if I can stand it.  The app is great at encouraging you to stay active and increase your activity level.  Here are the additional rules I set for myself during this period.  I switched to all whole wheat products.  All pasta, bread, tortillas, et al were replaced with the whole wheat versions because they are less likely to spike your sugar level.  I chose to quit drinking any alcohol, for the time being, for the same reason.  The biggest, hardest thing I did was I quit all artificial sweeteners as well.  This was hard for me because I almost exclusively drank Coke Zero, but I stopped cold turkey, and completely avoided all artificial sweeteners that are in food and drinks.  One other thing I did was to add ground flax seeds to my diet, by putting it in salads and adding it to chili or anything with sauce. I kept this up until the beginning of March when I started having some dizzy spells. The dizziness felt like I got up form a chair too quickly, so I checked my blood pressure.  It was 85/57, which is TOO LOW!  I quit taking my blood pressure medicine and I called my doctor and got an appointment right away on March 5th.   My doctor was amazed at my progress.  I had lost 37 lbs!  The doctor immediately reduced my high blood pressure medicine and ordered blood work, the results of which I got yesterday when the doctor took me off ALL the medicines I was taking! I'm still considered "overweight", but I'm not obese anymore, and I'm still working at it.  My A1C dropped to the normal range, as well as my cholesterol and my blood pressure are now normal and I'm currently down 42 lbs from my weight on December 26th when I started my crackdown.  I wasn't sure what I was doing would work, but it did! I hope this helps somebody!  If you need help setting up your daily targets, let me know!   I hope this helps somebody!  If you need help setting up your daily targets, let me know!

Lonnie, still an achievement! I tested abnormal / high A1c in July '18, changed to the ketogenic WOE, lost 35 lbs, and my A1c dropped back to normal within 4 months. Since then, I lost 15 lbs more and my BS remains in control. I never went on T2D meds, either; but I still consider myself pre-diabetic.

It was crazy for me when I got off all the meds. I remember looking at the goat fence in my back yard when I had finally broke through the 200 lbs. Barrier and I knew I could clear the fence! That's when my weight loss kicked into gear and I got wayyyy active and got to my goal weight of 180 lbs. I now maintain between 175 and 180 from morning to night. After a while, you figure out what you can and can't do. I weigh almost every day and just keep an eye on that. Good to see that you have come so far Lonnie. The power is yours!
