@Ocean_Girl this entry is specifically for you. Plus anyone who wants to join in the conversation. I uploaded a picture of the china I was talking about yesterday. As I was cooking my breakfast today, I realized the pattern was not exactly the same. It was similar. I photographed front and back. On the back it said it was made in the DDR. The DDR was East Germany (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) the former country that existed from 1949 to 1990. My wife smuggled them across or through the Berlin Wall. It is a long and involved story. I often said I should write a book on all of the things I have done in my life. She wanted something very special from our tour of duty over there so at the expense of almost getting shot by the East German boarder guards she smuggled a complete set of China, which as a guy, I thought was one of the dumbest things I had ever heard of – knowing her though, it was only one of the dumbest things I had heard of to that date! Any time we would argue and I would ever bring anything like that up her standard line was, at least I kept life interesting for you, didn’t I. There was no way I could argue with that.

I had to grin so hard when I saw this. The stamp kind of proves the age of the china ;-) I have one not from eastern Germany though, that states "Germany - U.S. Zone"

Love the china. Had to laugh out loud when I got to the "dumb" part. 😅 Thank you!! Great!

That is really awesome to share the back story - it make the piece even more interesting.

They are beautiful, but nothing would be worth getting captured, tortured and killed. I have an acquaintance, a doctor, who made a dell witha fellow college student that if he could get her out of East Germany she would support him for life. He did and she has gladly carried out her end of the bargain for about 50 years now. I don’t know how much money that equates to but she says all the time that it has been worth every cent.

It's a beautiful pattern. 😍 I completely understand your wife's actions and got a kick out of her response. 😄 That's not dumb, it's called spunk and character. 😉

Beautiful pattern & wonderful story! Plus—love the history lesson; the wall came down my senior year of high school. I have a jewelry box marked “made in West Germany” my aunt got for me.

Those days were one of many times in my life time when the dinner time evening news was filled with images of people being shot, killed or captured trying to cross no man’s land into west Germany or cars trying to ram through the fences. Only a few made it. Pass the corn, please.

@Ccandco ; Becky, do you remember a sitcom from years ago "Mary" starring Mary Tyler Moore? She worked in a newsroom with her boss Lou Grant? There was one episode were he calls her in the office and was talking to her about a show. I think she did something he didn't want her to do. He said "Mary, that took a lot of courage, that took a lot of spunk!" Mary smiles and says, "Well, thank you Mr. Grant" Then Mr. Grant gets real serious and yells, "I hate spunk!" lol Looking back now, it seems harmless but at the time, it was deadly serious. As Kenna was saying, yes, there were people actually being killed for running those checkpoints. It was a very good thing she never ran into an East German Guard with an itchy trigger finger.

@ Kenna Morton, it was a very strange and different world back then. I take it you either lived somewhere close to one of the borders growing up or had ties to the military - or maybe both. Looking at your name, I get the feeling you may have originally been from Europe? I recently returned for a reunion with the Berlin Brigade - it was a very, very different city. Fully recovered.

Not military but spent some not very pleasant time in Vietnam. Being in the medical field I have known many doctors and patients that have shared some harrowing stories of what they have been through in their home countries.

@Kenna, I will guess again, you were a nurse working for the government? I probably got that wrong too. That was a nasty war. My wife was a civilian contractor working for the government. My kids think my military years were spent having fun. We don't often talk about the really hard times. We had to live through them. Some still bring me to the verge of tears for people suffering for nothing they dod on their own. I can't thank you enough for what you did.

Jim— volunteer. To help immunize and evacuate refugees. My unit was taken captive by the Viet Cong. Sort of like Gilligan's Island, a 3 week trip turned into 4 unpleasant months in the jungle.

THANK YOU ALL - for the conversations and comments. I enjoy the interaction. If I don't directly answer everyone, I have read each response.

Skydiverjim, yes I see your point. I would have been concerned also. Glad everything turned out fine and your wife got her pretty plates. 👍
