The scale has me a little perplexed, 2 pounds heavier this morning than over the weekend and yesterday was a light eating day. I don't like it but I'm not going to worry about it. Last night I got on the elliptical machine for the first time in ages (have I mentioned that I hate that thing?). I made it 15 minutes, don't know if that's good or bad but it's a start at least. If I keep it up and get my cardio abilities up maybe I'll stop hating it. I'm thinking I'll alternate with the elliptical one day and isometric/calisthenics the next...that way I get cardio and strength/toning stuff. Part of why I don't like the elliptical is that I've been a little scared of how my heart will handle it. But no chest pains at all, just getting winded and legs burning. The doc has OK'd me to do it and just pay attention to what my body tells me.

Despite what the scale says I see and feel positive changes in my body so it's on with the program, eventually the scale will catch up. Have a great day everyone.

Have an awesome day Jim and don't stress it. The scale will catch up. You will be up to 30 minutes before you know it on the elliptical. Keep up the great work.

The best part of your journal for me is the part that reads, "I feel the positive changes in my body." That is an awesome feeling. It is SO CHALLENGING to shift our perception so that we value what our bodies say as much as we value what the scale says. Keep up the great work!

You're doing great mister! Way to be positive! PS...I hate ellipticals too...I bought a Bowflex Treadclimber (for $1200 mind you) and used it three times for like 5 minutes...argh...

Don't be discouraged, my weigh-ins rarely (if ever) correlate with how I'm doing on the diet/exercise side from day to day. Judging by your weight history graph I'd say your headed in the right direction. Keep it up and take care of your heart.

Exercise will cause your muscles to hold onto fluid so we often weigh more the morning after a workout! Good job on the elliptical - I also hate it and can only do about 15 minutes!

JMB, just like Draglist, I had well under 1000 yesterday and also lost nothing. It takes a few days for your body to get the message. The scale is lame. It's not called a random number generator by a lot of us for no reason! Keep doing what you know is right. The numbers will fall in your favor eventually. We all want that gratification, but it takes patience. What you're seeing is probably just water. Watch how it goes away in a day or two. As for the elliptical, those things are a bear. I was unable to go even 5 minutes, so your 15 makes you a superstar in my eyes. Keep it up!

Personally if I did my weight in here everyday it would look like a roller coaster up n down and down n up, I only record weight once a week every Friday and that works for me. So find what works for you and don't sweat the small stuff.

Weight loss is not linear. It is affected by hormones and cell regulation and all sorts of scientific processes within our body. Sometimes there's a delay in results. Sometimes results are instantaneous. But no matter what it is, it's not linear.

Shrug it off and keep going, maybe the scale is just messing with you. Keep up good work.

Appreciate that statement "I see and feel positive changes in my body. . .eventually the scale will catch up." Great attitude!

I think most of us find the elliptical pretty boring, but I don't think there's a better way to get the cardio without putting max stress on the legs and knees. It will get easier. Just let the speed and the endurance come naturally. It's just like any other form of exercise; the more you do it, the more natural it will become. I don't know if you're already using one or not, but the absolute best way to determine the increased level of cardiovascular health is by tracking your resting heart rate. If you haven't gotten one already, you should really invest in a Heart Rate monitor. Monitoring your heart rate is also the best way to keep from overstressing your heart during training. If you're already doing it, just ignore my ramblings.

Thanks all for the comments/support. DairyKing, I don't have a heart rate monitor but will definitely check into it. My resting heart rate is usually fairly low, in the 60's, I guess that's a good thing?

I seem to swing about 3 pounds a day. Not to worry. If you're cutting calories the effect will take place.

I have a fitness watch by SmartHealth which is a pedometer (I have a 10,000 stride challenge with a friend), heart rate monitor, distance counter, and calories burned counter (based on my BPM), it's amazing....I'm at 53 BPM resting nicely lol

Well, JMB, 60's is probably good, but it is relative; depends on where you started. Some elite athletes get down into the 30's - probably an extreme. As you get in better and better shape, you'll notice that you have to work harder and harder to get your heart rate up into that metabolic region, and then see how long it takes your heart rate to go back down after you've kept it at 70 to 80% for a time. Mine can be in the upper 60's when I've been a couch potato, but then it can rapidly escalate to 160 or so in just a few minutes, when I first begin an exercise regime. After a couple months of exercising, my resting HR will be in the 50's and it takes a good 4 or 5 miles at a tempo pace to get my HR up to 160 BPM. Just saying, a little change can be a big change.
