When I was a kid, I would look at military pictures of my father that were taken some 20 years earlier and think WOW - that was so long ago. Today I was looking through some photos that we changed to digital format years ago. These pictures are about 45 years old - older, I would bet than are some of you. It is funny how sometimes a picture, smell, or a sound can transcend your surroundings and take you back into a moment in time. I remember the first time I made a freefall jump. I had made a lot of static line jumps, but the first free fall is something else. When I got out of the army I swore I would never let myself get out of shape, but old man time has a way of working on your body as does the civilian lifestyle. However, I will fight old age until my last breath of life. Have a happy Friday and a great weekend my friends.

I have recently had need to go back and relive WWII through my dad’s writings. Even now it is hard to read and even begin to understand what he went through. He fought Rommel in North Africa and survived the Po Valley Push in Italy. What is happening today brings back memories of my own from Saigon 1975

Hey, Eral66, that's really looks good. I was a member of both the USPA and POPS for a number of years, but our club went bankrupt last year. Things got bad. I still have all of my gear so, who know what the next chapter holds.

Kenna Morton, those photos of 20 years ago I referred to were of my father’s old military pictures when I was a child. He too was in the second World War with Patton’s 14th Armor Division. My older brother was in the army during the Bay of Pigs (I am sure you recall, the period) so even though I was sure to get called with a draft number of 35 during Vietnam, I joined. It was sort of a family expectation back in those days. I was sure that I was going to Nam and had resigned myself to that fact, not that I was looking forward to going, but in those days I felt it was my duty. I remember my father telling me I was stupid. Now as an old man, I know what he was talking about. All things in our life is not as simple as black and white and all are not as what some would portray them to be. But, as life has all of these twists and turns for us, Nixon was elected President and I ended up in West Berlin facing off against the Soviet Union. I had no idea, as did the rest of our country, what was really going on in West Berlin. All of the news was focused on Southeast Asia with the proxy war, but there was a real war going on in Europe in those days no one really cared to know about. Berlin was 120 miles behind the Iron Curtain, and while bullets were flying over on the other side of the world the possibility of a World War 3 was very real on the European Side of the ocean. If anyone has an interest they can do some reading and YouTube reading – now after all of these years, much is becoming available to the public – searching for “Berlin Brigade Detachment A” or “Berlin Brigade” or “Field Station Berlin” any of those should take you to what was going on over there.

Thank you all for the nice words. I have changed a lot. Both mentally and physically. I have gotten older and weaker. lost a couple of inches in height, gained some implanted medical hardware such as a titanium rod in one leg and a few bolts in my shoulder.

Did you gain any wisdom along the way? Because that counts for something, I’m sure. 😉
