In all my dieting and lifestyle changes I have learned many things about myself.
A) I can not give up carbs. I love bread, crackers and all those carby goodness foods. I CAN do them in moderation though! Same deal with ice cream and fro-yo.
B) Sometimes a good salad is all you need. I love chicken right off the grill in bed of greens. I have also widely expanded my vegetable choices over the past 7 years.
C) Research and planning is important to going out.
D)Alcohol is a challenge for me. When I go to the bars I tend to drink too many calories, and usually after I tend to binge. Currently leading up to my race on thanksgiving (ankle healing pending), I have given up alcohol except for a wine festival in October.
E) I got frustrated when my weight stays the same for more then 2 weeks and I need to get over that.
F) I need to eat. I can not go extremely low on calories. I have tried several times eating 1200-1500 calories right off the start. I get cranky, hungry and I end up binging. Eating up to 1800 has been doing well and I am in a much better place.

I agree, I need this to be something I can do forever...and the thought of never having carbs again makes me want to run to the fridge. I have also learnt the little gem of portion control...a little of what I want is the best for me as it means I lose weight but still live my life on my terms... we can do this :)
