I am wondering ... I know there are quite a few people that depend on Fitbit, Samsung, or the Apple Watch to calculate your calories burned but I am wondering how accurate they are for a full days activities. I had my Samsung linked to the app and it said I burned only a few hundred calories a day. I know that the average person burns off about 60 calories and hour doing nothing. So, I figure the baseline should be (even if you are sitting around doing nothing all day) somewhere in the area of 1400-1500 a day. My Samsung would tell me 300 or 350 calories for a full day - that is ridiculous. I know when I was in the army, they did a study and the average soldier, while in garrison, burned an average of 3,000 calories a day. I have been using my Samsung now, just when I workout or do light exercise to calculate the calories I burn with the calories I have read the "average" person does - then I match it to whatever FS says by calories. For example, 30 minutes on the treadmill, the App says I burn 300 calories in 30 minutes. FS says 30 minutes is 362, the treadmill read out may read out 100 calories, so I figure out the different and what I calculate the body burns itself, subtracting that amount and come out with what FS says is around 7-9 minutes. I am not sure how accurate that is, but rationally that is the only thing I can come up with.

Oh well - lol - I am wishing you all a Happy Easter, Passover, spring break, or whatever holiday you all practice this time of year. Off I go to the gym.

My take on it is that they're all fiction, but once you settle on one, it develops a personal baseline over time and gives me a rough representation of what sitting on my butt in a chair looks like vs. hiking with the dogs in the canyon and climbing big hills. Or swimming for half an hour being 360 "active" calories and just over 400 "total". It's not perfect, but it's what I have. I think my daily burn charts in at 1200 for existing.

My watch only tracks calories burned through activity — it doesn’t include the BMR calories. Maybe yours does the same? The calories burned for activities shown on treadmills and other machines and in charts or apps are all estimates, because there are so many factors that determine how many calories you burn during exercise — age, weight, heart rate, aerobic capacity, metabolism, etc. Your watch might be the closest estimate since it probably uses the most personalized info in its calculation.

@Doogle1 - yes, I think mine is the same. It just tracks the exercise, that is the only thing that makes sense. @Katsolo - yes these are all rough estimates, I agree. And, I think my body must have gone through some changes because it was, if I could stick to around 2000 calories a day, I would easily lose. Now, I am lowering my target to 1,700, so I will see what this does.
