I am needing some reassurance and motivation. I haven't gone to the gym since last Thursday, and I am noticing it. :( It's like the longer I DON'T go, the more I don't want to go back. UGH. Please help!

Build what’s called a “stacked habit.” Tie going to the gym into something you already do. Motivation will ebb and flow, but once you build the habit and the behavior becomes engrained, it will be easy. It will be hard NOT to go! Now GO!! You got this.

In the ten years I've been working on this stuff on and off, I can confidently say for me personally the stronger indicator of success in any given time period is regularity of gym visits. Just go for a light session if needed - just go and start and you'll be glad you did =] YOU GOT THIS

Allegra nailed it! When I love the gym, I LOVE it! It's a slippery slope from "I'll just skip today" to "It's been a month and I'll hafta start all over 😭"

Love allegra's answer... but just to offer another POV, I am too introverted for the gym and success came for me when I combined walking, simple dumbell weights, and mat work.

You don't have to decide to go to the gym. Just decide to get in the car with your gym bag. Once you're in the car, you might as well go, and once you're there, you might as well work out. This helped me when the thought got a little overwhelming

You don’t have to like going and you don’t have to want to go—- you just go, or develop your own program at home. Find something you like to do like still amounts to activity towards your goal. Swim, hike with others.

Go to the gym! Think of all the times you have been to the gym in the past, and how hard you worked. Don't let that version of yourself down by not continuing! Past you is expecting you to go, and future you wants you to go because of the results you see. That's a vote of 2/3 for you going to the gym; present you is overruled. That's democracy for you!

Wait - this is a good time to back up and ask a few questions. @MReese, do you enjoy the gym/gym environment? Are you having trouble sticking with it because you don’t really like it, or because it’s a new habit? Is there something else you could do that you would actually enjoy (and thus be more inclined to stick with?). Very important considerations!

I joined a gym with classes, and I follow my favorite instructors on Facebook. They post reminders about class, memes, and other motivating things on Fb and tag me. It helps me commit to getting there!

There are so many of us that share the same issues regarding going to the gym/exercise. The only thing that helps me is yoga and trying to remain centered. AND staying out of my head and my own way.

Is there something you can do outside, our weather is fine right now. Walk in the park, run, then try the gym again. Maybe you just need a change. I need to get started.

I agree with smithy. sometimes all you have to do is go for a walk outside to get you started or sometimes I like to do a simple home workout before hitting the gym 🏋️‍♀️ just to get me in the rhythm of working out

Working out is a challenge. Most of the time, I enjoy it because afterwards I feel so much better. I have taken time off if I’m overtired or I feel my muscles need more repair time. How often do you lift weights? You may want to cut back some like 3 Xs per week v. 5 for ex.

I am over 50 and have a 4 year old so my time is rarely my own. I try to walk and/or do some bodyweight exercises or kettlebell during lunch and after work four days a week. I don't always get it done and sometimes I eat more calories than I burned but I keep trying. I get such great benefits in stress release and mood regulation I keep at it. There was a time in my life I was all but addicted to working out. I figure I'll want it eventually and if I don't, I still want to be healthier.
