I need to vent.

Seriously. I just spent an hour with a nutritionist who ran all up and down about a plant based diet is the only way, you will never lose weight, stay in shape, not get wrinkles, the whole enchilada if you eat anything but plants. She was so seriously that it was the RIGHT way and had all this 'this study says' going on.
Those of you that know me also know that I am a lifelong either vegan or leather wearing egg eating vegan. I WAS STILL OVERWEIGHT! and unhealthy! on a plant based diet! Horrors!
After struggling for years I decided to be open minded and try a different diet. I am even dabbling in chicken sacrifice to the horror of my vegan friends.
But you know what? I have lost the same amount of weight in the last 3 months that I have in the last three YEARS. My health issues have all but disappeared. I am not hungry or grazing all day. I feel awesome.
But actually that's not the point.....the point is there is no ONE diet. Everybody is different. I am all for sharing experiences but don't sit there and make me feel like a criminal for eating fat or meat or fruits or whatever. Be opened minded. Be supportive. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what diet you are on, what matters is sticking with it......

ok, done.

Thanks for the vent - I so agree! I have listened to the low fat, whole grain, high carb rant for years. I feel the best doing LCHF - and feel as if I could sustain this plan. It works for ME - and that is what matters.

If you're vegan and you take pills in gelcap form, you might gain weight. I stated gaining after the doctor told me my Vitamin D was low. I bought the gelcaps not knowing it mattered. I started getting heartburns, didn't knoiw why. I started gaining weight, didn't know why. Finally, I looked at the ingredients and saw that the gelcaps contain oil. Oh, my! So now I take all pills and vitamins in tablet form.

Hello , my name is IC and I'm a vegetarian. Aww poor chicken. Everybody step away from the feather pillows and nobody gets hurt. Oh come on someone had to say it and break up this sappy love fest. At the end of the day, it's what works for you. Whirlybyrd gelcaps also contain cow. or pig. or...

As a yoga teacher, eating vegan and raw was encouraged. I can tell you right now, after trying it (with the supervision of a nutritionist), I WRECKED my health. Badly. I had adrenal issues, anemia, and inflammation - just to name a few things. After I started incorporating meat slowly back into my diet, along with eggs, I found that I was getting stronger and healthier. I began losing weight again, and overall, felt the best I had felt in a very long time. I still do not eat dairy, because I have found that when I do, my seasonal allergies are hellacious. I eat eggs and free-range, grass-fed organic meat, organic produce and gluten-free grains. I might throw some fruit in there now and then, but my diet consists mainly of protein, whole grain and lots of veggies. I get plenty of fats, because I also supplement with 3,000mg EPA a day. This really, truly works for me. Every body is different. You must find a nutrition plan that is clean and that works exactly for your body - and damn what anyone else thinks. Kudos to you for honoring your body!!!

im a vegetarian and I eat very little and my behind gained weight so it really is your chemistry I think!!! (I used to eat ALOT of meat, and was skinny) so I completely understand and support you! good luck on your journey!! my only suggestion with eating meat is to pray over it so God can cleanse any residual energy left from that animals life :) God bless have a good day!! :)

i have a friend who was just saying the same thing .. she is vegan and still 30 lbs over weight and her dr has no idea why.. frustrating i bet..

IC, right those gel caps have gelatin, made from hooves of animals. Now vegan, vegetarian, omnivore it all depends on what you eat and how much you exercise. A vegan or vegetarian can eat and either gain weight or not lose weight, that is not always a criteria for a healthy weight.

I am not vegan or vegetarian... I was stuck for years over weight. I cut intake. Limit to 1200 and it is working. It is tough.. and I eat a lot of veggies. A calorie is a calorie.. does not matter the source. My daughter was vegetarian for year, it is amazing how many calories are in some vegan type foods.

My daughter has never been overweight except for one year in college when she went vegan. She found herself eating junk food more often.

Vegan is tough, you have to pay a lot more attention to what you are eating to be successful at it. Unfortunately there is a ton of crap foods now that are vegan which doesn't help either. Its easier for a lot of people to just turn to the junk. Oreos are vegan....Same is probably true of any diet though.

Yay! I don't like oreos! It's amazing how much vegan junk food there is. I take that back, it's amazing how much junk food period there is.

Definitely there is now a lot of vegan junk food available, look at the chip aisles in natural food stores!!!! Of course most cookies, cakes etc. can be made using vegan ingredients. Also things like nuts, lots of calories and so easy to eat a lot of. I find eating a mostly plant based diet keeps my feeling good. You have to pay attention to complementary proteins, the types of food you are eating, and the portions. Just like any other way of eating. Low carb you also need to. Have a friend who said she was doing low carb and she would eat a big bag of pork rinds daily. If I said anything she would say they were on her diet. Sure they are but not over 1000 calories for a snack daily!! She couldn't figure out why she was gaining weight.

My hubby is on this journey .... self imposed vegetarian. it's not easy but some people are able to make it work very well. He is healthier these days I find. I am not currently one of them. I love veggies more than I use to though and nuts are wonderful along with beans and lentils if seasoned right. WFN is proof of that. I get where you are coming from Nic ... there isn't any one diet that will work for everyone. Supporting you and sending positive vibes!

I keep looking for a lean pig. I keep looking for a fat cougar. Hmm. I am a true believer in 'to each his own' but once I read "The Zone" by Barry Sears and understood that insulin, a fat storage hormone, is released in response to carb intake I knew I'd found the key for me - get rid of the starches. Do I never eat them? Ohh, love them. It would foolish to say I'd never eat them. I have to live my life too. In fact - watch for my bloat post soon to follow. :D

Yep smoothiegal I was getting sick and have autoimmune issues now. I had some serious deficiencies that over time did some damage. That's the thing, its a balance. I think the only thing we can ALL agree on is the majority of your diet should not come from processed convenience foods and food of any kind, veg, meat, dairy, grains, should be as natural as possible. Thanks all for weighing in and the support. Made me feel much better.
