Dasey, Roses are a pain. Honestly, I don't think there is one secret. I don't know where you live, but in our area we have mild winters and a lot of mold and fungus issues. Mine need good deadheading, heavy pruning in the late winter, old mulch removed and fresh added each year so I avoid problems of carry over diseases and pests... Right now I have what I think is a rose midge that has gotten into a bush and I am fighting like crazy to keep if from spreading. Every bloom... and it has at least one hundred because it is my largest bush... will be cut off tomorrow and the whole bush sprayed. I am just sick. But,,. on the good side, I love my roses and they give back so much joy and beauty. I have 13 now, and I struggle against temptation to get more. I just know I don't have time. Good luck with your beauties! Maybe you live in an area of the country less miserable to grow them! When they are blooming, please post some pictures! Calorie free treats!!!

Thank you!! That's helpful!! We live in south dakota. last winter was the "worst seen in 20 years" 4 solid months of knee- thigh high snow on the grass. So far these are about 1-2 feet tall. We fertilized them once per month, and water if it's been hot and dry for a few days in a row

Thank you, everyone, for enjoying my flowers with me! Sarah1950, sadly, the pale pink have almost no scent, but the hot pink (last pic, upper right) is incredible. Also the purple ones are wonderfully fragrant!

Dazey, my you live in cold country. Yikes! I'm pretty familiar with bad weather from spending much of my growing up years on the prairies in Alberta, but balmy Seattle area is home now. Good luck with your flowers!
