I am going to try and do something that doesn’t come naturally to me, brag a little and give myself credit for the last year. Monday was my one year mark.

I am 5’6” short. I started this at 281lbs. High blood pressure and diabetic of course. Size 44 jeans, 3-4xl shirts. I hardly ever ate anything that was cooked at home. Fast food and restaurants were my life on the road. I had gout and had trouble walking through the airport.

Today. Still 5’6” short :-). 158lbs. Blood pressure and all of my labs are good. Don’t have to check on everything daily. 31” jeans and large shirts. I almost never eat out even though I am on the road all of the time.

I didn’t do any particular diet in the beginning. I knew what to give up. Fast food, soda, and coffee with cream and sugar. Learning how to eat took a hot minute. It has been a progression and I’m still learning. Largely I have become whole food plant based. We only eat meat maybe twice a week and we buy grass fed from a local farm. I love buying directly from the owners. A lot of this are things I have already written but since I am at a year why not? I remodeled the kitchen, learned how to cook. Learned how to shop. Things adults really should know how to do before they are 59 :-) I ran a 10k Monday morning. Just training. But felt good. I plan on doing an official one on my 60th birthday. I am a lot nicer of a person. Not My judgment but I have heard this from the owners, coworkers, my wife , children and grandchildren. I honestly believe it’s from less stress on my body. One last thought. Last Friday flying out of ohare I handed security my license. He scanned it in. Looked at it and then back at me and in a really serious voice “sir you have a legal responsibility to make sure your ID resembles your likeness please update it” then he handed it back and smiled and said nice job. The best part I know this is sustainable. When life gets out of control, we’ll it’s always out of control, it doesn’t affect how I eat. I can maintain this when I travel or not. And even better I love what I eat and don’t miss anything I have given up.

So much to celebrate 🎉! You make it sound so easy, and yet it is exactly what cardiologists and registered dieticians have been recommending for decades: stay out of drive thrus and cook & eat whole food. Love the 10k run and waistline NSVs 👏🏼🤗

You know what once you make time for selecting whole foods rich in nutrients and begin to enjoy the pleasure of that freshness in your cooking and snacks - you will never er look back!! I mean people moan about the cost of fresh strawberries or shirimp and smoked salmon.. but all of these are nutrient rich, resoundingly full of taste and will keep you healthy strong and fit, mentally emoitionally and physically, that's way worth more than getting burger and fries twice a week at half the cost, economically but hugely detrimental to your health, energy, fitness and pleasure... avoid the fried food, and the junk stick to the fresh whole produce. :) You deserve the proper fuel to keep your engine healthy and beautiful.

Great job Russell, that's a fantastic transformation!! @Bandrai, you mentioned the cost of fast food vs cooking at home. At today's prices even a Whopper meal for two at BK is almost 30 bucks, for 30 bucks a pop, I can cook a gourmet meal for two at home using whole foods. You are paying a lot more for unhealthy fast foods, both with the pocket book and your body!

Wow!! Similar story for me. I lost 80 lbs in one year. I had high cholesterol, a blocked artery and had to go through an angioplasty procedure because my artery was blocked. it was hard to breathe if I walked up one flight of stairs. After that I got scared and I got serious about losing weight. I also had a fatty liver, fat this and fatty that. I would like to lose about 10 lbs of fat but want to gain more muscle and. It's hard to take care of yourself when you have a high-pressure job. I'm retired now so I make lots of time. Me first everything else and everyone else second.

Thank you for taking the time to summarize your journey. I wasn't around to watch your transformation unfold, or to witness your lightbulb moments. I am heartened to read that you can run a 10k! From hard time walking to easy running. That is my dream 🤩

You have done amazing !! Isn't looking back on it and realizing when you make food choices based on nutrition instead of a calorie budget or where they fall on a macro chart the easiest decision to better health. When you fuel your body with the right foods the journey becomes such a freeing experience. It's like you not only got rid of the fat baggage but all the "noise" around what's for dinner!!
