I see a lot of talk in the fitness community about intuitive eating, “I don’t count calories”, etc. I am pretty much at maintenance and working on muscle growth at this point, but is is it crazy that I actually enjoy tracking my calories? Knowledge is power and I love knowing how many g of protein, sugar, and calories I am putting into my body. I definitely take a break here and there, mostly on vacation or on a weekend day when someone else cooks for me, but I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

'Intuitive eating' is a disaster for anyone with food sensitivity / food addiction problems. That's how I got to be 150 lbs overweight. If I weren't thinking it through everyday and educating myself about nutrition, I'd be gaining weight.

yes, tracking plays into my sense of control lol! I will never stop. I break the rules but at least I know by how much! 😅

I'm to the point where I can take breaks here and there from tracking as I have a better idea than I used to of portion sizes and nutrients, but it took a long time of tracking to educate myself. I eat intuitively in the sense of being aware of what I'm craving and listening to my hunger while also keeping my dietary goals in mind. I think intuitive eating has some good points about taking shame and shoulds and emotions out of food, but some of the advice I think is ridiculous, like keeping trigger foods in the house. I'll overeat pretzels, and they're nothing but simple carbs and salt, so why would I buy them? They seem to think if you remove something from your food environment that you'll get obsessed with it and start binging. Nothing of the sort for me. In fact, I no longer miss or crave them since I haven't been eating them for so long. And to circle back, I always go back to tracking, even if not every day now

I agree. I feel the need to see what I'm eating. I'm not sure I enjoy it but it helps me stay on track. 👍

For the most part I log everyday, and like you take breaks or don’t always log fully. But it helps me stay on track and it’s become a habit now. The bottom line is if it works for you keep doing it!

I’m not capable of intuitive eating unless I’m eating the same basic things almost of the time. I think it just depends on the personality of the individual. The other thing is that there is a tremendous amount of power in the information you can glean from tracking. This whole shift of macros for me has really made that apparent in my case. There are no bad foods, but i do better with more protein than i was taking in previously and it was more than my body felt like it needed.

So i forgot my power cord to iPad at wedding this weekend and had to wait a couple days for new one to get here. Ive always journaled my food in past when being health conscious (in a book) but found FS in January and have to say i have come to depend on SEEING (approximately) the calories, protein grams, fiber, sugar, sodium etc i am ingesting. I had some weird sort of withdrawal just trying to mentally track what i was eating. For me, it helps keep me accountable — harder to pretend im not eating something that i dont have the caloric room for.

Umandason, I have been tracking for the past 4 years +. Like you, I take occasional breaks, like vacations. I like tracking my macros as well as calories. Since nothing is totally off the table in terms of what I can eat, knowing the calorie content keeps me from going overboard. I have been using FS since 2010 & every time I stopped tracking before I gained weight.

That's called a healthy habit. When you don't do it, you miss it. Here is wishing everyone develops healthy habits.
