Has anyone followed the facebook group "Common Sense Keto" plan? It seems extreme but I'm intrigued. I don't want to start an argument because there are so many opinions out there and everyone can decide what is best for them, but this is the theory on common sense keto and it is food for thought:
"Caloric restriction works. The problem is that while it is working it is slowing your metabolism and damaging your natural levels of hormones. Eventually you are eating 1000 calories a day and you are losing more hair than weight. It takes longer for some than others to get there but it happens to everyone. The true problem with CICO is that as you reduce calories in, the body also reduces the calories out to compensate. The body always wants to stay where it is. Equilibrium." He advocates eating to your total daily energy expenditure because hormones dictate weight loss, not calories. He suggests eating at the proper macros (check out the facebook page for these macros) will keep insulin low enough/glucagon high enough to prompt weight loss even when eating at maintenance levels. He does say you can cycle calories to help lose a little quicker (2-3 days at maintenance, 3-4 days cutting 300-400 cals) this will keep your body from thinking energy is at a constant low and lowering your metabolism.
I'm afraid of crashing my metabolism...it takes much longer to heal it than to kill it. And my energy has been quite low and I'd love to see it increase.
What are you thoughts on this? Be nice...I'm not advocating either way I'm just intrigued by this idea and the success people are having doing this way of eating.

HardDaysKnight, I am not so sure that people would assume that it is the calories that would cause hair loss. I for one enter my food on another site where I can see minerals, vitamins, proteins and whatever you can think. It is easy to see that less food equals less nutrients. Therefore to me it would make sense that a deficiency in certain nutrients could cause hair loss in the long run. There are enough doctors who do say that eating too few calories can slow down your metabolism. I believe it. As I said I believe it. Now whatever people want to do is non of my business. I wish them the very best and I'm not in a position to try to tell them what they should do.

Agree completely HardsDayKnight! I still have such a thick head of hair the salon still thins it at least once a year, muscles I lift 3xweek, metabolism is incredible if it wasn't I couldnt be as active as I am 68 next month! I had blood tests done before the diet it was pitiful, I had blood tests done after losing 100 pounds everything came back normal. As many of you know I am no longer diabetic I no longer have high blood pressure. So before you believe anything you read here or elsewhere find out through experience. Good luck everyone on your journey!

I joined CSK, I think they're a little rigid in their dogma, basically forbidding the use of the word calorie replacing it instead with, "TDEE". Ok, so the name is different, concept the same, I guess that eliminates CICO acolytes from crashing their party. They also forbid using net carbs, opting instead to go with total carbs, which is way too restrictive. I see that the admin, Jack, has his own website and is a, "certified Nutritional coach", whatever that is, not necessarily bad in and of itself, but if I see him start pushing supplements or other products that HE's selling, that's all I'll need to know. So far, seems a bit too rigid in their approach.

Haven't read it Phil but your points are valid in my estimation. I'll have to go investigate lol. Jack gets $$$ everytime someone clicks his site so he's happy.

I joined a keto group that is associated with intermittent fasting. It is great but so many of them are going months without food that I need to find my place! LOL!!

I doubt if they're actually going months without food. Maybe they are, but 5 would get you 10 that they're bloviating. I don't trust much of anyone that's profiting off weight loss, be it from, "coaching", selling supplements, or pushing traffic to their various web presences.

crockett2, are you T1 or T2? Lots of research is showing the ketogenic diet works for T2, but if you're are taking medications you need to work with your doctor to monitor your diabetes and meds.

Going months without food is not on my list of things to do!

I could never (by choice) go months (or even days) without food 😁

I’m just catching up after a holiday and spotted this wonderful discussion. Momma - what a great, neutral opening you posted! It’s nice to see everyone’s emphasis is on the nutritional benefits of whatever way of eating you choose to lose weight and not is criticising one method or another. All the best!

Thanks Phooka! If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that there are a lot of opinions and philosophies 🙂 whatever works for you is the right one! Haha it was a good, positive discussion
