Not a bad result one week in, but I know better than to expect it to keep up at this pace.

This last week (and my goal for next week) has been focusing on adjusting. I'm not getting super strict on any calorie or food restriction just yet. Instead I'm focusing on adding the little habits that need to be in place in order to succeed long-term and on making those feel like part of my routine.

Things like meal prepping my breakfast the night before so I have good choices ready to go instead of just grabbing what's convenient - that has helped immensely already. And the irony isn't lost on me as I type this that I didn't do that last night and that I better get my butt in the kitchen and get something ready to go *before* I feel the need to eat.

I've gone all week without my morning caffeine crutch, which honestly I expected would take longer and be more miserable to kick. It's amazing how much I had convinced myself I *needed* that morning coke to function, and yet how I really haven't missed it, especially the sugar and caffeine crash in the early afternoon.

For this next week, I'm going to focus more on movement. I want to add some quick morning calisthenics to my routine. I had told myself I'd do them as soon as I exited the bathroom in the morning, but that seems to be a problematic point as I haven't done it once at that time. This week I'm going to do them after I put my tea in to brew. That seems to be a good time where I have 5 minutes to burn and will already be in a large open room convenient to moving around.

Also, I'm going to focus on bringing back more of my authentic self. I gave up a lot of my own hobbies when the kids came along, and now that they're old enough to care for themselves and even participate in these with me, it's time to reincorporate those parts of who I am.

With that in mind, I'm going to finish putting my bike back together this week.

It hadn't been ridden in a long time, so what started as just a tune up turned into replacing my tires, but when putting the wheels back on I noticed one of the brakes was rubbing a bit, so I tried to adjust the tension screw, but the place the tension screw goes into snapped, so then I had to replace the brakes, which then led me to think, "well, I should probably upgrade my brake levers while I'm doing the new brakes since I'm switching brands (it can be important), and it doesn't make sense to have new brakes and levers without redoing the brake cables and housing, and oh, why not get rid of those grip shifts and get a combo brake lever/trigger shifter while I'm at it, and getting rid of the grip shifts means I'll need different size grips on it, so I'll have to get new ones of those, and well crap, everything looks new on this thing now except for the pedals, so let's replace those..." Thankfully, I stopped myself at the point I started thinking about taking it all apart again and having the frame sandblasted and repainted.

I enjoy wrenching on my bike, and I think this overhaul was equal parts pushing back having to confront just how fat and out of shape I've gotten, removing future excuses for not riding my bike by making sure it's completely safe and ready to go, and also just finding joy in an old, familiar hobby. So I'm not going to kick myself too much over it. It served its purpose. At this point I'm just waiting on the new shift housing to arrive, and that will be a 15 minute job and I'll be on the trail again.

So THIS WEEK! I'll post a photo from the trail. Intention and accountability, right?
