After logging my food for the past year, I have come to realize that my problem was not eating unhealthy foods but overeating. It was easy for me to eat anything and everything to comfort myself. Logging my food made me look at the nutrition labels and understand the serving size that I should have been eating. My mission now, and I have accepted it, is to limit my foods to a normal serving size. If I want to have everything, I need to eat half of a serving for some items.

sucks, eh? lol I think my problem too was serving size and like you, not eating unhealthy foods. When I look at what I should be eating compared to what I was, well, I was eating for 1 and a half. Or, always munching.

Deb you are absolutely right...it is the size of portions, they say your stomach is the size of your fist, well we just have to think about it...at least I know my food consumption was not the size of a fist, so for that reason I know how I put on weight...plus all the other junk foods that were tempting, ie: sugar etc...we are pulled into this eating frenzy by the way our food is introduced to us in televised commercials, large advertising etc. and many lies about what is in this food...we need to take control and make our own lives as healthy as possible because listening to the media/television/FDA etc. is not working for a healthy lifesyle...

Portion size. Ugh. It has to be done though. For the longest time I thought feeling full was the same as having hunger satisfied. Now I know the difference but still want the relaxed sensation that feeling full gives. Also, I can be done eating, and still want to chew more. Having really fibrous foods like celery or carrots on hand can help me with being able to chew for a longer period of time. J

Deb you hit the nail right on the hammer!!!!!!- I actually had more natural unprocessed food today than I had in a long time but my calorie count went through the roof today - I will make up for it the next couple days

Added footnote my carbs were way lower than what I get usually and Protein higher!!!- I should have known better anyway breads and pastas always put weight on me quick even in my 20's

So right Deb, I've eaten pretty healthy since the 70's, still gained weight. Logging foods forced me to start measuring. As my granddaughter says you can have too much of a good thing.

Deb some good news I have already dropped 2.5 pounds in water weight since I got home, so I should be okay in morning- just have to remember measure homemade portions more carefully- Going to have play time with Buddy- I make sure he gets 20 minutes at least of fitness a day and it gets my body up and running too

Hi Deb, i agree, portion distortion is my problem too. I'm working on weighing and measuring so that some day I will just eye ball what a normal portion should be. Learned some tricks, like protein portion should be no more than size of deck of cards or palm of hand. First time I saw 4 oz of steak I cried. :-)

@Jovial / good observation about feeling full and having satisfied the hunger. Two different things. I find I miss the 'feeling full' feeling. I Also comes to play that food tastes good to me, and of course, that's why I want more of it, even after having satisfied my hunger. I guess I have to learn to say 'no' to myself. (which I do, suck eh?) lol

That was my biggest realization. I was eating healthy just eating way to much. Often telling myself, it's healthy it's okay. What a lie I was telling myself.

That's a good thing about logging our food. We can go back & examine what we did & tweak it where it needs tweaking. In fact I did something similar this week Deb,I went thru my favorite meals & my cookbook then deleted what I don't want in my diet any longer or modified it so I can continue to benefit from it. :) It's something I want to be sure to keep up on as I continue to lose weight. Great discovery on your portion control! :)

I think our sense of portions has become distorted by the huge portions in restaurants and the fact that many items you buy look like they would be one portion are actually more if you read the label. I used to rarely measure anything. Last year I came across measuring cups and spoon sets for $1.00 that I liked, bought 3 or four sets, they live in a big basket on my counter reminding me to measure. Having so many I always have clean ones avail. My scale is also handy on my counter. They are ne used constantly. Also using smaller plates and bowls really helps.

I echo everything said before me and agree. Real food, good food, just not too much of it. I have to battle the 'but it's healthy so I'll have double' rationalization all the time.

My questions are what tastes better? What has more flavor? What really satisfied? Good homemade food, the production fast food, junk snack food? What is your trade off? I know my answer as a steady diet, of course there is a foray occasionally into unhealthy foods for one reason or another.

@wholefood / sometimes I think you're my long lost twin when reading your posts. Oddly enough, I have exactly a multiple sets of measuring spoons that I bought for a $1, in a small wicker basket, next to the food scale. To answer your question, what tastes better, for me the junk snack food. How can it not? it's got the (3) main ingredient that tingles the pleasure hormones. But in the long run, it's the healthy food in an appeasing way, that satisfies the hunger and provides a better quality of life. It's for sure a trade off. But health should always come first. And you won't get that with junk food if you make it your main eating habit.

Measuring and logging food has helped me realize how much I was eating before both in quantity and calories. I took in hundreds, sometimes thousands of extra calories every day without even thinking about it. Now I've come to realize that it's ok and even a good thing to actually feel hungry and not just have a craving before eating. If I'm genuinely hungry that means it's ok to eat. You're doing good Deb, almost at your goal!
