Hello from the desert southwest in Winterhaven, California! The warm weather here is perfect for getting my exercise walking or riding my bike on the many trails in the area. I thought I'd share with you a few recent pictures I've taken out here while on my walks.

Photo Description:

1) That's me, in need of a haircut.

2) Imperial County, where I am, is the only county in California where saguaro cacti (Carnegiea gigantea) grow. They also grow in Arizona and Mexico. Saguaro cacti don't start growing arms until they are at least 75 years old. This one is growing from the same spot as an ironwood tree (Olneya tesota).

3) A few weeks ago we had a bunch of rain. The rain has caused flowers to bloom. This is a California Fagonbush (Fagonia laevis) in bloom.

4) The rain also turned all the ocotillos (Fouquieria splendens) green. Until recently they all looked brown and dead.

5) One of my favorite things about being in the desert is seeing the amazing sunsets. This is the view from our campsite of a recent one.

That sunset is amazing. The cactus? I think my neighbor has one. If it’s the same kind it is definitely flourishing. And sprouting all around

Jealous of your life - though I will be semi-retiring to South Carolina and the BEACH in four months

Beautiful! And handsome. =) Great pics! I did not know that about the cacti not growing arms until they're 75. Plants lead such different lives than all the other living things, haha.

Lonnie have you ever taken advantage of the paddle cactus or make nopales. A little tedious but fun to do at least once. Incredibly nutritious, and used by the Mexican people and Indians to treat both hypertension and diabetes. When I first decided to try it I researched those health claims in medical related literature and the claims were acknowledged and validated. Not a major player obviously but for people’s without access to medical care it had some efficacy.
