Just returned from a 4-day business trip back to back with a 4-day driving adventure to an out of town wedding. Quite a minefield for me. In the past, these events would have become opportunities for no holds barred eating and drinking adventures.

Weighed myself the morning I left for business and then the morning after our return from the wedding. Result, +0.6 lb. I will take that and learn from it. Controlled intake balanced by a reasonable amount of physical activity is actually possible for me.

Now that I'm back home, I'm looking for the lower calorie density, higher volume meals that I have been using to ride the scale downward. I'm not usually vegan but this meal absolutely was. Its a mound of steamed kale littered with assorted prepared veggies - roasted eggplant, roasted peppers, steamed rutabaga and pressure cooked navy beans garnished with my signature San Marcos chipotles puree. Fits my < 400 calories/meal template.

Make it, log it, eat it. The weekend beckons.

Being away from your normal daily routine is hard while restricting calories. You did good.

Whenever I've traveled (which was weekly for a job I once had), I always skipped breakfast (having only black coffee), ate salads for lunch (because salads are always available), and a salad plus a side veggie or broth-based soup for dinner. Never any desserts or bread brought to the table. Eating with clients for meals I would order food that I hated (for instance, liver or anything with mushrooms) so that I would not be tempted, and simply eat the accompanying veggies or salad. I would spend my dinner talking instead of eating. My weight remained between 119-124 lbs. Also, when in airports, I would walk endlessly up & down the concords to get in exercise while waiting to board. An hour of "waiting" for my flight was 300 calories burned.

JBananas. That is an ingenious and very disciplined travel and activity plan! Clearly it worked for you. At first blush it sounds extreme but the fat and calories in most restaurant food is ridiculous and absuty warrants extreme measures. Thx for sharing.

Yeah, it does sound strict, but there's no fat-free dressing for those salads I ate, and the side veggies were cooked in oil & butter, and who knows what all went into the soups (I just avoided the cream ones like chowders). On days that were all travel, I would grab a banana or apple on the way out of the hotel, and snack on a bag of nuts purchased from the newsstands in the airports. Healthy choices when my other options were Burger King and Cinnabon. You burn no calories when sitting on a plane for 5 hours. I traveled constantly for 4 years, so I had to set some guidelines -- and that included when I was with clients. Really, there's no excuse for eating poorly on the road, as even 7-11 has fresh fruit, yogurt, and bags of nuts.
