premade frozen food, canned soup, or sandwich ingredients (like prepackaged lunch meat and/or cheese) are my go-to when the depression gets bad and I can't make anything myself

Soup, depending on how depressed I am! Hot & Sour delivery from my local Chinese resturant that makes it with chicken not pork especially for me. Good ole Campbells Tomato Soup from the can with a grilled cheese sandwich, if I have energy enough to make something for myself. Progresso Clam Chowder from the can, if I want something quick, and can just toss a bowl full in the microwave.

Shallow fry spatchock chicken breast and onion rings add mayonnaise once to side (sometimes garlic mushrooms too) you will not believe how utterly tasty simple and soul uplifting it is ( cook in a tbls of virgin olive oil and sometimes with a couple of pinches of black pepper).

Since early March I have struggled also - lost two close family members, sister-in-law and brother. So I totally understand. My place was the couch. I had lots of 'healthier (if they can be) frozen food my husband had stocked up in the freezer before he left to go somewhere for the month. Even having these I had a hard time being motivated to get up and heat them up. Lost lots of weight. I finally had to leave and go to where my husband was to get myself out of it. I knew I was in a really bad place mentally and physically also. I was eating less than 700 calories a day for all but 2 days in July. My heart felt best wishes to you. Try to have the courage to do something to get yourself to a better mental place. Since I lost my sister-in-law last March I mentally have been down. I have some really bad phobias that the COVID has really not helped and this is also causing me to be depressed. Then to lose my brother in July I hit it pretty low. Please take care and be brave and try to have to will-power to get yourself either mentally or physically to a safer place. Hopefully do both. Not sure I'm there mentally but I am physically.

I can tell when my son is depressed. He craves sushi. It’s the clue for us. Me, I want ice cream! Rich, creamy, the real freaking deal no fake stuff! My sister goes for crunchy stuff. Chips. Cheetos. Cheezits. Things like that. If it’s a big depression. I mean we lost someone then it’s the sweet stuff!! And only then. We reach that point we aren’t talking to anyone!

Grilled Ham & Cheese, or Menudo, Cocido both Mexican/Spanish/Latin Soups that are very good comfort foods. On the sweet side: Ice Cream/DQ, Cake/Birthday or German Chocolate, CArrot, Cheesecake, Pie/apple, cherry, boysenberry, Raspberry, Lemon-Meringue, Chocolate-Satin, Turtle, Cream-puffs, Chocolate Eclairs, Churros w/strawberry filling, Funnel-Cakes, Cookies, Candies, Frozen-yougurt ala Cold Stone., mixed nuts :-P Everything is good especially when it's low-calorie, sugar-free, and just nibble, bite, and eat in moderation. Don't expect to eat it all or all at once either. Just enough to satisfy the down-&-outs.

I find any kind of soup very comforting. Pacific makes some very good ones in cartons that are easy to reheat by the cupful. I like their tomato and butternut squash best. If you need a treat, I like frozen blueberries with a few drops of vanilla cream stevia and truwhip. I hope you feel better soon.

A big pot of clean out the fridge soup, loaded with veggies. Just throw it all in the pot with some broth & seasoning, put it on simmer and forget about it.

I'm with RM & Cindy. Eggs all the way. Top it off with favorite cheese & mushroom. Start to finish 25 min. Mushroom is meaty. When I feel up to prepping ahead. A sauteed a bunch, packs of snack size ziplock for quick meal portions. I freeze asparagus for Frittatas. Easy peasy.

Freeze low sugar homemade brownies for super depressed days. This keeps me from chocolate bars. I'm glad we no longer keep mini chocolate bars in the house. The leftover Holloween candy was the worst. I thought they were too sweet, but still ate them b/c they were there.
