I really shouldn't be allowed access to books, much less an iPad, until I've learned to read responsibly. For the past 10 days or so I've been absorbed in finishing Shelby Foote's 3000-page history of the Civil War. As a direct result of my inability to put the stupid iPad down, I've gone from an average of five visits to the gym a week to three, and my average time to bed has been 4:30 a.m. and average sleep per night about five hours. Fortunately, I just finished volume 3, so hopefully life will get back to normal, at least until summer vacation starts and I can surrender myself to reading as much as it pleases me.

I totally sympathize with your addiction to the written word. Fortunately (or not) since I haven't been working, I have been able to indulge in my sedentary activity of choice. Your time reading has not been wasted if you have read Foote's work in it's entirety. That is an admiral feat. Instead of signs admonishing patrons to be quiet, libraries should have signs that read: PLEASE READ RESPONSIBLY or FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS READ EXCESSIVELY. Have a good time at the gym!

I completely understand, what I like to do is take the book with me to the gym. You can read as you walk on the treadmill or sit on a bike or elliptical. You'll find that you don't want to get off the machine because you want to continue reading, so it makes for a great workout!

I haven't chanced the iPad at the gym; instead I read Time magazine while I'm riding the stationary bike. It takes three sessions to get through one issue, so I've started working down my backlog. Between the magazine and the music on my iPod, I can almost forget that I'm working out. Which is good, because I find aerobic exercise to be incredibly boring without a distraction.
