I've been having lower right back pain for a week in a half or so. It got worse last Sunday where I was up all night in pain then had to work two 12 hour shifts in a row. I believe my disk is bulging now. I've tried everything over the counter and nothing helps. The heat helps when it's on there, but soon as I take it off the pain is back. I can't deadlift for weeks now, until this is better. This is so frustrating. I've still been going to the gym. On a positive note, I left the ED and will be working at a Dr office. It'll be better for me physically and mentally. I'll get an actual lunch every day. No more weekends or holidays and it'll be 8 hour shifts. Eventually I may look for a prn ED job that I can work once a month, but I'll have to see how my body does, because it seems like my back is getting worse, so I may not be able to really do that job anymore, that's another reason why I left the ED.

Let it heal, don’t rush doing things that will further injure it. Workout around the pain

Thanks Supergainz1, I am. I really like deadlifting and it sucks, but believe I know I will make things worse if I don't stop and let it heal, so I'm just doing RDLs and not going heavy like I normally go.

That sucks! Back pain is the worst so I hope it heals quickly!

I am so sorry. I hope so much you heal quickly. You work so hard... how frustrating to have this setback.

Sorry to hear that. I had back pain likely from a bulging disc for about a year in 2021-2022. It’s so frustrating 😩 wishing you a speedy recovery. (Btw the only reason mine lasted so long is that I was stubborn as hell and kept training jiu jitsu- a sport where I would spend most of my time supine with rounded back on the floor with people trying to put their full weight on me. As soon as I stopped doing that for a couple months it started to go away. Just wanted to add this because I don’t mean to imply that this should be a long term struggle, and I certainly hope it’s not for you)

So sorry RN! What a terrible situation! I hope your back gets better quickly. Ibuprofen for the inflammation is my go to.

Oh, oops - just saw your note about the otc meds. 😔 Hope the heat keeps pain at bay at least.

Thank you all

Have you had any imaging done? I think an orthopedic doctor may prescribe a steroid to reduce the inflammation to evaluate the cause of the pain.

Mary's Muscle Freeze is my fave when low back is on the warpath. It's a gel like Biofreeze on super-speed!

S linerud, I start a new job tomorrow so I have to wait until my insurance kicks in. I'm going to try to call my chiropractor Monday and see if he'll see me and do an x-ray. I know a cr or MRI would be better, but they only have an x-ray there.

When I hurt my back I was prescribed physical therapy. I went in thinking it was a waste of time because I'm in good shape and exercise religiously. It helped tremendously and I still do the exercises they taught to this day. Good luck on your treatment plan!

I understand that's a tough position waiting for insurance. I'm sure you know that xrays don't show much soft tissue, but it may be enough for a chiropractor to help you determine if you need another provider after your insurance starts. I agree with @DLonggone that PT's are also a valuable resource. One has taught me how to gently adjust my own back and how to keep my back aligned, especially because back injuries are common in our line of work when we're moving people.

dLong- same here!! I had 2 herniated discs and degenerative spinal Stenosis. I still warm up with my physical therapy exercises (which were my workouts 2021 thru most of 2022) and cool down with stretching.

I follow Squat University online and think I'm going to try that McGuill Big 3 routine each day and see if that helps. The guy on there is a PT

Hi Diana, Some days it doesn't bother me and other days it hurts on the lower right side and is irritated. I now work an office job that I just started and at the end of the day it still gets irritated and I'm just up and down from sitting, not lifting people anymore.
