I've been away for a bit... I went out of town to visit family, while I was there, my grandmother passed away. It was devastating at first, but I was glad I was already there when it happened. Now that I'm back home, it has taken me a week just to get focused and back on track.

A bit about my grandparents... My grandmother had Alzheimer's, and had been in a nursing home for three years. It broke my Granddad's heart to put her there, but he knew it was the best thing for her. Of the entire three years she was there, my Granddad only missed visiting her 2 days. TWO DAYS... He would leave his house at 7 am, go to the nursing home, and stay until 7pm every day. EVERY SINGLE DAY! If that isn't true love, I don't know what is. Every time I think about it, I tear up... I wish I could've visited them more often, but I live 8 hours away, so frequent travel isn't that easy. My granddad is doing ok, but I worry about him a lot. I've been calling him almost every day since I've been home, although I should've been calling that often all along. He's an amazing man, loving father and husband. They both set a wonderful example to follow, always staying by each other's side, no matter what. I wish I lived closer...

Thanks, Glen, and yes, I do believe it was a lesson and a precious gift to all of us who witnessed the love and affection he had for her. Every time I would visit them at the nursing home, every employee I met would tell me how touched they were by my grandfather's constant presence beside my grandmother. They said they had never seen such devotion like his. Sometimes, my father and I would try to get him to take a break, maybe play some golf or something, but he never would. He would always say, "I'm not going to leave her alone because she wouldn't leave me"... It used to baffle me as to how he could be there so long, day in and day out, but now I understand and see the beauty of it. It truly was amazing. I just pray that, as a family, we're able to be there for him now.

Such a sweet love story . . . must make it a bit easier for you to 'accept' (handle/deal with?) the loss of your grandmother, knowing she was so well-loved and also being nearby at her passing . . .

That is what a great love story is. You were privileged to see it first hand. Not a lot of people do.
