Hello! Newbie here! First “post”! Hope this is how this thing works. Wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether a fitter heart(low resting heart rate and higher heart rate recovery) could help contribute to a lower metabolism. More efficient heart doesn’t need as many calories?? I couldn’t really find much Googling. I feel every guess on how many base calories I need is always way off based only on my age, height, and weight. Thoughts?

Welcome! I’m not sure about a lower heart rate equating to a lower metabolism. I say this because mine was always 100+ when I weighed nearly 300 lbs. Having said that, things like hypothyroidism can cause both at the same time. But in the absence of that, I don’t think so. I would focus on building muscle mass which we know increases metabolism by itself. The right lifestyle for your body also will help. The trick is figuring that part out. 😎 I’m hypoglycemic so a Keto lifestyle has made all the difference for me. Adding exercise and weights this year has really helped me turn a corner in all things non scale related. Try to listen to your body - our bodies talk to us constantly. At least that’s what has worked for me. We all have unique DNA so you’ve just got to crack that code. Glad you’re here! My two cents, for what it’s worth 🙂

It would have helped if I had kept track of my resting HR back when I was first getting fit. It’s 55 now and my heart rate recovery is pretty good as well. It’s not like I’m saying I’m super athlete fit but it’s like all the apps algorithms think my body is at one level based on weight(and still needs more calories) and maybe it’s at the next already. I don’t know; just trying to make sense of it all. Anyway, I’ve certainly been learning about listening to my body this year with what I now understand is called intuitive eating. Like am I actually hungry or just bored and waiting for the physical feeling of hunger to appear. And yes, I know I could do with some strength training and probably won’t get to the more dialed in levels of where I can go with my fitness until I do. BUT it’s hiking season! Cardio and outside gym all the way! 🎉 I’ll think about weights in the fall. 😅

Thanks, keyten77! I certainly will! From walking at the start to backpacking and running now, exercise has been my buddy all the way through. I feel there’s a good balance somewhere for me between trusting my body and using tracking as a tool. Haven’t figured it all out yet but trying!

With a significant weight loss, your needs to maintain will be significantly less for someone at the same weight who has never lost that much.
