Trying to get my wife to understand what I need to eat is proving to be very difficult. I am a diabetic and need to be not eating pastas and White rices. She makes Raviolis and White rice for consecutive diners. The rice was incorporated into the sloppy Joe mix with the beef. When I asked why she made this even after our discussion last month I was met with "So I HAVE to make you something different, YOUR own meal???" I said no Ill make it myself. Just thought the whole family would like to lose and control sugar too. It is really difficult controlling sugars at night with no support.. I am in the 200-210 range in the morning but after snacks and lunch at work that I prep. I am coming home in the 90-120 range. Any suggestions to help me get her off her rock on this?????

I was recently diagnosed and am kinda having the same issue. My kids and hubby are just fine and dont have to watch a thing, but now that i cant have all the cheap filler foods (pasta, rice, Potatoes and bread) I was finding myself having to make two meals. So now I have decided they can make thier own dinner and I'll make mine. Its not that they don't want to support me, I just thinks its hard to understand how serious this is and just isnt gonna go away. That this is a life style change for us. So now I let hubby and kids make what they want, and I plan my own meals. If I can eat what they are wanting then great I may use part of is (protien and veggies) but I always make sure I can make my own meal if needed. I'm still working on my numbers but I will do this, with or without thier help. And YOU can too.....Once she sees you are serious maybe she will come around a little start supporting you more... Good Luck!!!

I really sorry you're having this challenge. I'm also diabetic. As for the rice and pasta dishes it would be an easy fix if she kept the rice and pasta separate from the sauces. Unfortunately, you're not alone. I see this all over the various forums. My mother died over a year ago due to diabetic complications. She had gangrene more than once and it cost her one of her toes. I had someone ask me "where do I get my motivation" They also were diabetic. I told them to look up pictures of diabetic feet. Guess I'm not very tactful *smiles* Keeping our blood sugar under control is serious business. That is if we want to keep our feet and toes. I'm also not very excited about having a stroke. With morning numbers like that it comes down to either educating her or making your own food because if things don't change, she could be serving you dinner with you in a wheel chair and I've seen my share of T2 diabetics in wheel chairs. Very best wishes, Ruby.

I would suggest that you help with meal preparation and/or planning. At least then you know you will have options that you can eat. And, as an added bonus, it might inspire your wife to change her cooking style and make healthier meals for the entire family. My situation is somewhat similar, but with a role reversal. I'm the one who wants to lose weight, but I also do all of the meal preparation and planning. However, my husband prefers different food than what I need to be eating for my own health. (He's naturally fit and athletic, so he can basically eat whatever he wants.) It can be hard to feel like you need to prepare 2 different meals. Cooking for a family and trying to satisfy everyone can be frustrating. It is easy to fall in a rut and prepare what is familiar and/or easy for you to make. Sounds like that might be what is happening with your wife. I definitely empathize with you needing to eat healthy to control your diabetes! However, I can also see where you might get some positve results by making dinner a shared effort. Good luck! Hope it all works out for you. :)

Oh pmaz...I am so sorry that she isn't more supportive. All the above suggestions are great. Perhaps you can show HER a picture of diabetic feet...maybe that will make her understand a little better. I, like Ruby, am not very tactful either. This is about your health...if it comes down to having to cook for yourself, do it! Do not let this derail you! Good luck!!
